CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
About Jenni
Hello!
I'm Dr Jennifer English and I'm a registered and chartered Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years clinical and academic experience. I am also a mother of three, a keen swimmer, and a Pilates enthusiast.
Alongside a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Paediatric Neuropsychology from UCL, I have specialist experience working in the community with children, teenagers and young adults with an acquired brain injury. I have also worked extensively with children experiencing life limiting illnesses and physical disability in a specialist hospital setting. Through this work I have an understanding of the psychological challenges illness and injury brings and the importance of timely and empathic support for the whole family.
Approach
I strongly believe that focusing on the system around a child is the key to change. I strive to equip the adults in a child’s life to be able to provide the optimum psychological support needed to promote recovery and independence. Using my understanding of how brains develop and the ways a brain injury can disrupt the development of skills, I provide specific advice grounded in the science of psychology. I seek to understand children’s behaviour as a communication and to adapt the environment to help the child succeed. Working closely with families, I support developing routines and strategies to minimise the impact of any deficits. I build partnerships with parents, schools, and support teams, and am experienced in working with Case Managers and multidisciplinary teams.
I understand the emotional impact of an acquired brain injury on the whole family and the ongoing adjustment required when caring for a child with additional needs. I aim to consider the needs of all family members and create opportunities for supportive and reflective conversations.
Psychological support for the young person is led by their individual goals and delivered using evidence based psychological models. My approach is to work creatively to engage children using a combination of talking, drawing, play and games.
